Boxing - What Is So Great About It?
Boxing has become a popular form of exercise with a strong stable of devotees. If you have not tried it before, you could be forgiven for being a little bit hesitant. However, there are some great benefits to boxing for both men and women that may convince you to give it a try.
The most obvious benefit of boxing is that it provides a great full body workout. It draws upon every resource your body has on offer – core strength, cardiovascular fitness, coordination, power and strength. Boxers are some of the fittest athletes you will encounter because they need to develop across each of these areas in order to perform. Whilst it looks easy when you are watching, put on some gloves and you will quickly discover that any form of boxing is really hard work!
This means that anyone that participates in boxing will see a big improvement in their overall fitness level in a short period of time. Boxing, like many other sports, is ultimately a combination of physical fitness, skill and technique. So, even after you have been boxing for some time, there is always an opportunity to improve and challenge yourself. In the right environment, every boxing session should provide you with a stretching workout because you can keep pushing yourself.
I remember the first time I tried to box, I was so unfit that within a minute I was out of breath and my arms were burning with pain. My technique was non-existent and I could barely manage a warm up, let alone the actual session. Over time, I may have improved (slightly) but as someone that is considered to be extremely fit, I still walk away from a boxing session covered in a glaze of sweat. I love the continuing challenge that boxing provides so I never become bored or complacent during my workout.
In addition to all of this, boxing provides an excellent form of stress relief. In my case, I think it is the freedom to unleash my stress onto an inanimate object combined with the rush of endorphins I get after a fantastic workout. I know that it is extremely primal and perhaps brings out my inner cave person, but when I am really stressed, having the opportunity to push myself to the limit in a safe environment is very satisfying. It is quite liberating to hit something, as hard as you like, and as many times as you feel the need to. This isn’t about violence. It is about letting all that pent up energy out in a directed manner so that it does not fester away inside of you. In the simplest terms, boxing gives me a natural buzz that comes with the freedom to let loose for change. There are just not that many ways to do that in today’s world!
I think that is why boxing is so popular. If you speak to people that have tried it, they will always rave about how good it feels both during and after. It is empowering, fun and provides an amazing outlet.
So, if you are exploring ways of getting fit or looking for a new challenge, I would highly recommend boxing. There are lots of variations to suit everyone and it will help you stay exceptionally fit!
